Mexico, Missouri and Audrain County
Mexico is the self-appointed "Mainstreet of the Midwest," and is a nice stable community with a population of under 12,000... very friendly, low cost living. The town has a local full service hospital with ambulance service, good "rural" schools including a Vocational-Technical school, as well as a community college and Advanced Technology Center, the highly rated Missouri Military Academy and a new Agricultural Plant Science Research Center.
Audrain county boasts that it is the "bio fuel" capital of Missouri, with both a bio diesel and ethanol plant in the county (made from locally produced soy beans and corn). Mexico tries to be progressive, and hosts a growing farmer's market during the summer. There is also the active Presser Performing Arts Center and an active Parks and Recreation Department.
This is a farm community with plenty of resources for homesteaders and farmers of all kinds. There are more tractor dealers in town than car dealers. Everything in Mexico is just 10-15 minutes away from our home, including a Wal-Mart Superstore.
The economy here is quite stable, with a reliable employment base that's surprisingly diversified. Outside of farming and healthcare, major employers include warehousing (with many seasonal jobs) and light manufacturing. Home Depot runs the Home Decorators distribution center and Brookstone operates a call center and distribution center in Mexico. The Chamber of Commerce maintains a list of businesses and employers.
If you can't find what you're looking for in Mexico, Columbia is just 45 minutes away: This is a big college town with a population of over 100,000, with many restaurants and other cultural activities, as well as tons of shopping and jobs.
